Research and conference: Two papers at EAROPH conference

The 44th EAROPH Regional Planning Conference was held on 9 and 10 November at the Empire Hotel and Country Club, and featured two papers from the GD/ES programmes.

In line with the theme of the conference, "Managing urban growth: Challenges for small cities", the papers examined two different aspects of urban planning in Brunei.

The first, presented by Dr Jose Edgardo Aban, assessed climate change impacts of urbanisation in Brunei-Muara using remote sensing methods. It found that analysis of Landsat satellite imagery revealed several urban heat islands in the district. This knowledge could contribute to future urban planning, for instance to mitigate localised hotspots by allocating green space, among others.

The second paper, presented by Dk Dr Noor Hasharina and produced collaboratively with Gabriel Yong, Izni Azrein and Khairunnisa, evaluated the influence of cultural typology on space needs in highrise buildings. Brunei's housing development authority is moving towards vertical housing and this study hoped to contribute towards effective planning and design of residential highrises.

This paper used a combined insider-outsider approach to developing the cultural typologies, an online survey that garnered more than 200 responses and additional work by a group of students from the AD-3307 experiential module.
